New Year's Non-solutions; or, The New Year of Hope and Achievement

I won't be around to post on New Year's Eve-- since I'm leaving TODAY for the Bahamas (yipeee!)--so I thought I should take this time to update my Non-solutions from last year with new Intended Achievements and Intended Explorations. As a reminder-- these are not things I "resolve" to do or to change about myself, but a mental grocery list of sorts for what I would like to accomplish or enjoy in 2011. Only things that I can actually achieve with some effort are included in this list (i.e., no NYC Marathon for me!).

2011's Intended Achievements:
- Resolve final incomplete grade
- Pass Oral Exam
- Begin (and ideally submit) Dissertation Prospectus
- Create Systematized Budget on mint.com
- Complete Whole Living 28-day Detox
- Create a Weekly Meal Plan (and stick to it)

2011's Intended Explorations:
- Cook one Entirely Vegetarian Meal per week.
- Run a 5k
- Visit Europe and Napa w/ Lawyer Guy
- Join either the Park Slope Food Co-op or a CSA
- Rediscover Love of Knitting

Last winter, I dubbed 2010 the Year of Hope and Achievement and at the time the hope was that I would achieve a baby. That didn't happen (obviously), but I still feel good about the hope that still lives in my heart and the growth and happiness I was able to achieve in often difficult situations.

So why not roll it over to next year? 2011, you are hereby named the New Year of Hope and Achievement. You may not give me everything I hope for, but I certainly won't go down without a fight

  1. I love this b/c it is super realistic. You may have inspired me to focus on other areas of my life, seeing as "baby in year 20xx" has been on the list for years already.
Have a wonderful time on your trip, lucky you to escape the cold and snow of NYC.
hoping for love and happiness for you in 2011....

  4. Enjoy your trip! What a wonderful time to get away. And good for you for setting goals over which you have some control. Baby-as-goal just doesn't seem to be where any of us needs to be. Because if you get the baby, it's not as though you're going to be thinking: "Score, I totally achieved what I set out to!" The babything is much softer and rounder than that. So what you're doing seems right on target. Bon voyage!

  9. So jealous of your trip! Soak in some sun for all of us. Love the Intended Explorations list, inspiring me for a new hobby for 2011 myself. Was just yesterday eyeing a sewing machine, or maybe a keyboard...

  14. Excellent list, Sloper. And I like 2011's name. Damned skippy.

(Also, the Scotland Run 5k is coming up in March or April...it's usually a good time of year weather-wise for a run and has a good vibe. I think there's also something in Prospect Park).
